Why Overland Travel to El Salvador Is Booming
Most travel content about El Salvador starts at the airport, but a huge share of visitors never set foot in one. According to the Ministry of Tourism (MITUR), El Salvador received more than 3.2 million international visitors between January and August 2026, up 22% year on year. Guatemala was the No. 1 source market with more than 1.3 million arrivals (+44%), ahead of the United States (881,842) and Honduras (626,396, +26%).
In other words, El Salvador's two neighbors together sent more visitors than the rest of the world combined, and backpackers on the classic Central America loop — Antigua, Lake Atitlán, El Tunco, Copán, León — almost always cross at least one of these borders. If you're adding El Salvador to a bigger trip, this guide is for you. For the bigger picture, see our Guatemala–El Salvador tourism boom analysis and the latest tourism statistics.
El Salvador–Guatemala Border Crossings
Guatemala is El Salvador's busiest land neighbor, and all of its crossings run around the clock. Distances below are from San Salvador, as published by Salvadoran authorities ahead of the 2026 August holidays.
| Crossing | Department | From San Salvador | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| La Hachadura – Pedro de Alvarado | Ahuachapán | 126 km | 24 hours | Coastal route; paso ágil available |
| Las Chinamas – Valle Nuevo | Ahuachapán | 120 km | 24 hours | Pre-check at km 92.5; paso ágil available |
| San Cristóbal | Santa Ana | 98 km | 24 hours | Closest to the capital; paso ágil available |
| Anguiatú | Santa Ana (Metapán) | 120 km | 24 hours | Pre-check at km 114.5 toward Metapán |
| El Coco | Santa Ana | 100 km | 24 hours | Smaller crossing |

La Hachadura – Pedro de Alvarado (coastal route)
The southernmost crossing, near the Pacific in Ahuachapán. It's the natural choice if you're coming from Guatemala's Pacific coast or heading straight for the western beaches and the surf towns of Surf City. Paso ágil is available here.
Las Chinamas – Valle Nuevo (Ahuachapán)
The classic crossing for the Guatemala City–San Salvador highway route, 120 km from the capital, with the Río Paz marking the border. Salvadoran migration runs a pre-check point at the Bypass gas station, km 92.5, about half a kilometer from the Escalante bridge on the road to the border. It's also the gateway to the Ruta de las Flores towns of Ahuachapán department.
San Cristóbal (Santa Ana)
At 98 km, the closest Guatemalan crossing to San Salvador. It feeds directly into Santa Ana, a good base for Lake Coatepeque, the Santa Ana volcano and the Mayan sites of Tazumal and Joya de Cerén.
Anguiatú (Metapán, Santa Ana)
The northern crossing toward Esquipulas and eastern Guatemala, 120 km from the capital. Its pre-check point is at km 114.5 on the Pan-American highway toward Metapán, in front of the Instituto Nacional Benjamín Estrada Valiente. Anguiatú is also one of the crossings where El Salvador and Guatemala have been integrating customs operations.
El Coco (Santa Ana)
A smaller 24-hour crossing about 100 km from San Salvador. Useful as an alternative, but most buses and shuttles use the bigger crossings above.
El Salvador–Honduras Border Crossings
Two Honduran crossings are open 24 hours; the two mountain crossings keep daytime hours, so time your drive accordingly.
| Crossing | Department | From San Salvador | Hours | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| El Amatillo | La Unión | 209 km | 24 hours | One-step paso ágil for Salvadorans and Hondurans |
| El Poy | Chalatenango | 92 km | 24 hours | Northern route via Chalatenango |
| Perquín | Morazán | 240 km | 5:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. | Mountain crossing; plan daylight travel |
| Puente Integración | Cabañas | 110 km | 5:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. | Shortest opening hours |

El Amatillo (La Unión)
The main crossing on the Pan-American route toward Tegucigalpa and Nicaragua, 209 km from the capital in the far east of the country. Honduras' migration institute (INM) says that with paso ágil here, Salvadoran and Honduran travelers complete a single procedure in the country they're leaving, and their entry is recorded automatically. Other nationalities should expect the regular process.
El Poy (Chalatenango)
Just 92 km from San Salvador through the green hills of Chalatenango, El Poy leads into western Honduras. It's a scenic option if you're combining a mountain stay around La Palma with a Honduras leg.
Perquín (Morazán) and Puente Integración (Cabañas)
Perquín, 240 km away in the mountains of Morazán, is open 5:00 a.m.–9:00 p.m. Puente Integración in Cabañas has the shortest window, 5:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m. Arrive with plenty of daylight to spare.
The CA-4 Agreement: What It Means for Your Passport
El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua signed the CA-4 free mobility agreement in 2006. It works on two levels:
- Central American citizens of the four countries can cross using their national ID (the DUI for Salvadorans) instead of a passport. The agreement does not authorize work or study in another member country.
- Foreign visitors who enter one member country can continue overland to the others under a harmonized entry regime — similar in spirit to Europe's Schengen area. You normally won't need a new visa at the Guatemala or Honduras borders.
The catch: your authorized stay applies to the CA-4 region as a whole, not to each country separately. Days spent in Guatemala count toward your time in El Salvador. Check the stay granted on your entry stamp, and read our El Salvador visa requirements guide if you hold a passport that needs a visa.
Paso Ágil: Crossing Without Leaving Your Car
The "paso ágil" system lets drivers and passengers do migration control from the vehicle, through a window at the migration booth. It operates at four El Salvador–Guatemala crossings:
- Valle Nuevo – Las Chinamas
- San Cristóbal – Anguiatú
- El Jobo – San Cristóbal
- La Hachadura – Pedro de Alvarado
Two important exceptions: it doesn't apply if you're traveling with children or teenagers, who get a more thorough check, and travelers from outside Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua must get out and complete the process at the Guatemalan Migration Institute window. So if you're a U.S., Canadian or European tourist, plan for the regular line.
Documents Checklist
What to have in hand at the border
- • Passport valid for at least six months (CA-4 citizens may use their national ID instead).
- • Minors: a valid passport plus a birth certificate or other proof of relationship to the accompanying adults.
- • A minor traveling without one or both parents needs a notarized authorization.
- • Driving your own car: the vehicle registration card (tarjeta de circulación) — and if the car isn't in your name, a signed, authenticated authorization from the owner.
- • Your exit control ticket: after migration control you may receive a ticket — keep it for the whole trip, as it's requested when you return.
Salvadoran authorities say that, in general, crossing to Guatemala and Honduras is free for tourists and private vehicles, though some situations require extra procedures. People with legal restrictions, court orders or unpaid child support can be stopped from leaving El Salvador. Luggage may be inspected at any crossing.

In San Salvador, Pullmantur departs from the Hotel Sheraton Presidente in Colonia San Benito; in Guatemala City, from the Holiday Inn in Zona 10. On the Guatemala route, ticketed passengers can also board in Santa Ana at the Puma Santa María gas station. The baggage allowance is one 50 lb suitcase plus a small carry-on. Tica Bus also runs San Salvador–Guatemala City service and connects south through Central America; check its site for current fares.
Once you're in El Salvador, local buses and taxis take over. Our transportation guide and the ia.sv bus route finder cover getting around.
Driving Across the Border
- Time it right. Even 24-hour borders get long lines around holidays like Semana Santa, the August fiestas and Christmas. Pullmantur itself leaves Tegucigalpa at 5:15 a.m. to beat border traffic.
- Use the pre-check points at Las Chinamas (km 92.5) and Anguiatú (km 114.5) when they're operating.
- Rental cars: ask before you book whether cross-border travel is allowed and what paperwork the agency provides. See our El Salvador rental car guide.
- Carry small US dollar bills — El Salvador uses the dollar, and cash helps with tolls, snacks and any incidental fees on the other side. Our money guide explains the rest.
- Stay connected: a regional or local eSIM keeps maps working on both sides of the line.
