Going Home Is Different From Being a Tourist
The United States sent 881,842 visitors to El Salvador from January to August 2026, according to the Ministry of Tourism — and a big share of them are Salvadorans and their kids going home to see family. If that’s you, the questions are different: When will cousins be off work? Can I bring the TV for my mom? Do the kids need anything special? Let’s go through them.
The Family Calendar: When to Go (2026–27)
| When | Occasion | Why it matters for a family trip |
|---|---|---|
| Nov 2, 2026 | Día de los Difuntos | Families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves; a national holiday. The night before, Tonacatepeque holds La Calabiuza. |
| Nov 28, 2026 | Carnaval de San Miguel | The country’s biggest street party, held the last Saturday of November during San Miguel’s patron saint festivities. |
| Dec 24–25, Dec 31, 2026 | Nochebuena, Navidad, Fin de Año | The main diaspora homecoming. Busiest flights and the remittance peak — and the season when the duty-free allowance has traditionally been raised. |
| Mar 21–28, 2027 | Semana Santa | Processions, alfombras in Sonsonate and Izalco, beach trips. Holy Thursday–Saturday (Mar 25–27) are national holidays — beaches and roads fill up. |
| May 10 & Jun 17, 2027 | Mother’s Day & Father’s Day | Both are paid national holidays in El Salvador — a meaningful (and less crowded) time to surprise a parent. |
| Jun–Aug 2027 | Summer high season | US school vacations. Avianca adds dozens of weekly flights; expect higher fares. |
| Aug 1–6, 2027 | Fiestas Agostinas | San Salvador’s patron saint festival honoring the Divino Salvador del Mundo. Aug 6 is also Salvadoran-American Day in the US. |
| Sep 15, 2027 | Independence Day | Parades in every town; a national holiday. |
Holiday dates per El Salvador’s Labor Code; San Miguel Carnival date per elsalvador.travel; Salvadoran-American Day per US House Resolution 721 (2006). Local patron saint festivals vary by town.
Christmas and New Year: the big one
December is when the diaspora goes home — and the numbers show it. Remittances hit $961 million in December 2025, the biggest month on record, and airlines fill flights from every US metro. Nochebuena (December 24) is the main family dinner, followed by fireworks at midnight and again on New Year’s Eve. Book flights early, and see our Christmas and New Year travel guide for what’s happening across the country.
Semana Santa 2027: March 21–28
Holy Week is early in 2027. Palm Sunday is March 21, Easter Sunday is March 28, and Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Holy Saturday (March 25–27) are paid holidays, so relatives with regular jobs will be free. It’s also when half the country heads to the beach, so book any coastal stay early.
August: fiestas agostinas
San Salvador’s patron saint festival honoring the Divino Salvador del Mundo runs August 1–6, with August 6 a national holiday. It overlaps with US summer break, which makes it popular with families who have school-age kids. Fun fact: August 6 is also Salvadoran-American Day, recognized by a 2006 US House resolution. See our Fiestas Agostinas guide.
Quieter windows
Early November is underrated: you can join the family for Día de los Difuntos (November 2), catch the San Miguel Carnival on November 28, 2026 if you’re from the east, and the rainy season is winding down. Late January and February are dry, and flights are usually calmer after the holiday rush. Your own town’s fiestas patronales may be the best excuse of all — ask the family when they are.
Customs: What You Can Bring for the Family
Every diaspora suitcase is half gifts. Here’s what El Salvador’s rules say.
Personal items are exempt
Under the Ley de Equipajes de Viajeros Procedentes del Exterior, your used or personal belongings for the trip are exempt: clothing; toiletries in limited quantities (no more than six units per type or 20 in total); two used cameras or video devices; a portable audio device; a personal computer; a printer; and similar items, as summarized by Diario El Mundo.
New goods: $1,000, $1,500 in December–January, and the holiday $3,000
- Year-round: the baggage law exempts new goods worth up to $1,000, and up to $1,500 in December and January, according to Diario El Mundo’s summary of the law.
- Holiday decree: in November 2025, the Legislative Assembly approved a temporary decree (Decree 467, approved with 58 votes) raising the limit to $3,000 in new goods from December 1, 2025 to January 31, 2026, including exemption from IVA. Legislators said it recognizes the diaspora’s contribution through remittances, and an identical exemption was approved in previous Novembers.
- For 2026–27: as of October 5, 2026, we haven’t seen the decree for the coming holiday season. If the pattern holds, it would be approved in November — check before you pack, and we’ll update this guide.
Excluded from the holiday exemption: transport operators, package couriers (encomenderos) and crew members traveling for work. And anything that looks like merchandise for resale can be taxed regardless of value.
Note that customs guidance published in 2026 by El Diario de Hoy cites a $500 threshold for declaring purchases. Because sources differ, the safe approach is simple: keep your receipts, don’t pack multiples of the same item, and declare when in doubt. You can file your declaration ahead of time on the Aduanas website (aduana.gob.sv), or ask Aduanas directly: phone 2244-5182, WhatsApp 7073-8768.
Cash
- El Salvador: you must declare more than $15,000 in cash, per person, when entering or leaving.
- United States: carrying more than $10,000 out of (or into) the US requires a report to US Customs and Border Protection.
Rather than carrying envelopes of cash, consider sending money ahead — our remittance guide compares the cheapest ways.
Documents: The Checklist That Saves Trips
Before you fly
- • US citizens: a valid US passport — required to leave and re-enter the US, and enough to enter El Salvador without a visa.
- • No entry fee: the Assembly abolished the $12 tourist card (Tarjeta Migratoria de Ingreso) in a 2025 reform of the migration law.
- • Salvadoran passport holders: make sure it’s valid; renewing at a US consulate costs $60 and requires a valid DUI.
- • Kids who are Salvadoran nationals: to leave El Salvador they need a valid passport and must travel with both parents — or carry a notarized authorization from the absent parent.
- • Expired DUI? Renew it online from the US at dui.sv/exterior ($55, delivered to your home) before the trip.
- • Driving? Check our rental car guide.
Our DUI and passport guide has the full fee table, and the dual citizenship guide explains registering US-born kids.
If You Have TPS or Another Temporary Status: Read This First
Don’t travel on assumptions
- • El Salvador’s TPS designation was extended through September 9, 2026. As of early October 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that more than three weeks after that deadline, the administration still hadn’t announced whether TPS for about 170,000 Salvadorans would be extended or ended; officials said beneficiaries would retain work authorization in the meantime.
- • TPS holders generally need advance travel authorization from USCIS before leaving the US. Leaving without it can put your status at risk.
- • With the designation in limbo, the risk of traveling is higher than usual. Talk to a licensed immigration attorney or accredited representative before booking anything.
- • The same advice applies to anyone with a pending immigration case or without lawful status.
This isn’t legal advice — it’s a reminder that a family visit should never cost you the ability to come back. Reliable updates come from USCIS and established immigrant legal-aid organizations.
What’s Changed if You’ve Been Away a Long Time
Salvadorans who haven’t been back in years often say the biggest surprise is how differently people move around the country now. Homicides have fallen dramatically, and the US State Department rates El Salvador at its lowest advisory level — read our full safety picture, including the state of exception and what it means for visitors. Other practical changes:
- Payments: the dollar is still everything. Bitcoin is accepted in some places but is voluntary for businesses since the 2025 reform. See our money guide.
- Phones: a local or travel eSIM keeps WhatsApp working everywhere — our eSIM guide compares options.
- New things to do with the family: from Surf City to Bitcoin Beach in El Zonte and the Ruta de las Flores, there’s plenty to show the kids. Our things to do guide has ideas.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ship a box instead of carrying everything?
Yes — encomiendas (courier packages) are their own category with their own rules and fees, and package couriers are specifically excluded from the travelers’ holiday exemption. Ask your courier which customs rules apply to your shipment.
Is it safe to bring a laptop and phones as gifts?
Your own personal computer and devices are exempt as personal items. New electronics for family count toward the new-goods limit, so keep receipts and stay under the threshold — or declare the excess.
¿Dudas? Pregúntale al asistente de ia.sv.
Bottom Line
Pick your moment — Christmas for the full family, Semana Santa or August for the festivities, November or February for a calmer visit. Pack gifts within the customs limits, keep receipts, sort out passports and the kids’ paperwork early, and if your US status is anything but citizenship or a green card, get legal advice first. Then go eat pupusas with your abuela. For flights from your city, see our direct flights guide, and find everything else in our hub for Salvadorans in the USA.
