What Is Surf City El Salvador?
"Surf City" is both a place and a policy. As a place, it's the string of black-sand beaches and right-hand point breaks along El Salvador's Pacific coast, starting about half an hour's drive southwest of San Salvador in the department of La Libertad. As a policy, it's the government program — pushed by President Nayib Bukele since 2019 — that has poured money into that coast: new and widened roads, a rebuilt malecón (seafront promenade) in the port of La Libertad, lighting, signage, and a steady run of international surf contests.
The stated goals are straightforward: bring in international visitors, create jobs, and attract private investment in hotels and restaurants, while turning El Salvador into a brand name in world surfing. It has worked on the visibility front at least. The International Surfing Association (ISA) says Surf City El Salvador has hosted 11 ISA events since 2019, and the World Surf League's elite Championship Tour has made Punta Roca a regular stop under the name Surf City El Salvador Pro — most recently in June 2026.
Surfing is also part of a bigger tourism story. The Ministry of Tourism reported 4.1 million international visitors in 2025 and more than 3.2 million between January and August 2026, up 22% year on year. See our El Salvador tourism statistics 2026 for the full numbers.
Surf City 1 vs. Surf City 2
Surf City (phase 1): the La Libertad coast
This is what most people mean when they say "Surf City." It runs along the coastal highway west of the port of La Libertad and packs world-class waves, surf schools, hostels, boutique hotels and nightlife into a short stretch of coast. If it's your first trip, this is where you'll spend most of your time.
Surf City 2: the wild east
On April 3, 2025, President Bukele formally inaugurated the first phase of Surf City 2 in Jucuarán, Usulután, focused on the eastern coast. At the launch he announced that Las Flores, Punta Mango and about 19 km of coastline had been declared a World Surfing Reserve — a designation for protected, culturally important surf zones, of which he said only 13 exist worldwide. Surf City 2 is far less developed than the west: fewer hotels, emptier lineups and a longer drive, which is exactly the appeal for experienced surfers and slow travelers.
The Beaches of Surf City, One by One
| Beach | Vibe | Wave | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| El Zonte | Laid-back village, home of Bitcoin Beach | Right-hand point plus beach peaks | Intermediate; beginners on small days |
| El Sunzal | Quiet, next to El Tunco | Long, forgiving right point | All levels; longboard heaven |
| El Tunco | Nightlife, restaurants, the busiest hub | Sand-bottom beach break | Beginner to intermediate |
| La Bocana | River-mouth break by El Tunco | Punchy rights and lefts | Intermediate to advanced |
| Punta Roca (La Libertad) | Working port, malecón, fish market | Long, fast right over rock | Advanced only |
| Las Flores (Surf City 2) | Remote eastern coast, San Miguel | Right-hand point | Intermediate to advanced |
| Punta Mango (Surf City 2) | Wild, hard-to-reach east | Powerful right-hand point | Advanced |
Wave quality depends on swell, tide and wind on the day. Always ask locally before paddling out.
El Zonte — Bitcoin Beach
The westernmost of the main Surf City towns, El Zonte is a small village with a rocky right-hand point and a relaxed, community feel. It's world-famous as Bitcoin Beach, the grassroots experiment that inspired El Salvador's national bitcoin policy. Expect yoga studios, small guesthouses and a quieter night than El Tunco. More background in our Bitcoin in El Salvador guide.
El Sunzal — the longboard wave
A long, forgiving right-hand point that peels for a long way on a good swell. It's the reason El Salvador keeps hosting world longboard championships: the ISA World Longboard Championship returns here October 16–22, 2026 for the fourth year in a row (our ISA Longboard 2026 guide has the details). On smaller days it's also a good step up for improving surfers.
El Tunco — the hub
Named after the pig-shaped rock just offshore, El Tunco is Surf City's social center: surf schools, board rentals, restaurants, bars and the widest range of accommodation. The sand-bottom beach break is the most common place to take a first lesson. If you want to walk everywhere and have options for dinner every night, base yourself here.
La Bocana — the river-mouth peak
Right next to El Tunco, La Bocana breaks where the river meets the sea, producing punchier rights and lefts. It's a competition venue too: the WSL World Junior Championships run here November 25–29, 2026.
Punta Roca — the crown jewel
At the west end of the port town of La Libertad, Punta Roca is a long, fast right-hand point over rock and widely considered the best wave in the country. It's the venue for the WSL Championship Tour's Surf City El Salvador Pro. It's not a beginner wave — the entry is over rocks, the takeoff is critical and the locals rightly own it. Watch a few sets first.
Even if you don't surf, La Libertad is worth a visit: the rebuilt malecón comes alive in the evening, and the fish market on the pier is best early in the morning. Playa San Diego, a short drive east, is a long, sandy alternative for swimming and walking.
Las Flores and Punta Mango — Surf City 2
In the east, near El Cuco in the San Miguel area, Las Flores is a right-hand point that draws surfers looking for fewer crowds, and nearby Punta Mango is a more remote, powerful right. Both are now inside the World Surfing Reserve announced at the Surf City 2 launch. Plan for a much longer drive from the airport and fewer services — this is a trip for experienced surfers or anyone who wants the coast without the scene.
When to Go: Surf Seasons Explained
El Salvador has surf year-round, but the character changes with the seasons:
- Roughly March–October (swell season): consistent south swells from the South Pacific light up the points. This is prime time for Punta Roca and for intermediate-to-advanced surfers. It overlaps with the rainy season, when afternoon and evening storms are common — mornings are usually the best window. Our green season guide explains what to expect.
- Roughly November–April (dry season): sunnier, drier weather and generally smaller, cleaner waves. Better for beginners, families and non-surfers, and the most popular time for general tourism. See best time to visit El Salvador.
- Right now (October): the tail of the rainy season, with the coast at its greenest and a packed contest calendar. Our October travel guide covers weather and events.
Surf City Contest Calendar: Rest of 2026
| Event | Dates | Where |
|---|---|---|
| ISA World Longboard Championship | Oct 16–22, 2026 | El Sunzal |
| ALAS Global Tour Costa del Sol | Oct 29 – Nov 1, 2026 | Costa del Sol |
| WSL World Junior Championships | Nov 25–29, 2026 | La Bocana, El Tunco |
Sources: ISA; El Salvador Travel official agenda; World Surf League. Contest schedules depend on swell — confirm with organizers before booking.
Contests bring crowds and higher room prices, especially in El Tunco. If you're coming to surf rather than watch, avoid contest weeks or base yourself in El Zonte or La Libertad.
How to Get to Surf City
Fly into El Salvador International Airport (SAL), southeast of San Salvador. From there, the La Libertad coast is a drive of roughly an hour depending on which beach and the traffic; most visitors use a hotel shuttle, taxi/ride-hailing or a rental car. Our airport guide, direct flights from the USA and rental car guide walk through the options. Going on a budget? The ia.sv bus route finder helps you ride local.
Surf City 2 is a different trip: the eastern beaches are several hours from the airport by road, so most surfers rent a car or arrange a transfer and stay a few nights rather than doing a day trip.
Where to Stay
- El Tunco — best for first-timers, social travelers and anyone who wants to walk to restaurants and surf schools.
- El Zonte — quieter, community vibe, Bitcoin Beach culture; good for longer stays and digital nomads.
- La Libertad / Punta Roca — for serious surfers who want to be on the best wave at dawn, plus the malecón and seafood.
- Las Flores / El Cuco — for Surf City 2: fewer, simpler options; book ahead.
Prices swing a lot with contest weeks and holidays, so compare live rates rather than relying on old numbers. Our El Salvador travel cost guide gives a sense of budgets.
Practical Tips for Surf City
- Money: El Salvador uses the US dollar; bitcoin is accepted at some businesses, especially in El Zonte. Carry small bills. More in our money guide.
- Reef and rocks: many points break over rock. Booties help, and a basic first-aid kit is worth packing — see the packing list.
- Sun and heat: it's hot and humid year-round; surf early, hydrate, and use reef-safe sunscreen.
- Etiquette: respect the lineup, especially at Punta Roca. Locals grew up on these waves.
- Connectivity: grab an eSIM before you land to check surf forecasts and maps.
- Safety: the coast is now one of the country's busiest tourism corridors. Read Is El Salvador safe? for the full picture, and the travel health guide before you go.
- Entry: check visa requirements for your passport.

Frequently Asked Questions
Where exactly is Surf City El Salvador?
The original Surf City is the La Libertad department coastline southwest of San Salvador, from El Zonte to the port of La Libertad. Surf City 2 covers eastern beaches including Las Flores and Punta Mango.
Is Surf City good for beginners?
Yes — El Tunco's beach break and El Sunzal on smaller days are good places to learn, especially with a surf school and in the dry season when waves are usually smaller. Avoid Punta Roca until you're experienced.
Do I need a car?
Not for phase 1 if you stay in El Tunco or El Zonte — shuttles, taxis and buses connect the beaches. For Surf City 2 in the east, a car or private transfer makes life much easier.
