Is December a Good Time to Visit El Salvador?
For weather alone, December is hard to beat. The rainy season wraps up in November (see our November travel guide), so December brings day after day of clear skies, dry trails and calm evenings. Our best time to visit El Salvador guide puts the whole dry season — roughly late November to April — at the top of the list, and December is when it settles in for good.
December is also the most social month of the Salvadoran year. Streets and plazas are lit up, towns hold patron-saint festivals, the big international concert tours close out the year, and Salvadorans living abroad fly home for the holidays in large numbers. That energy is the reason to come — and the reason to plan.
The simplest way to think about it: December 1–17 gives you the best weather, a full event calendar and still-reasonable prices. December 18 to January 2 is true peak season, when flights from the US, rental cars and beachfront rooms are in highest demand.
El Salvador Weather in December
Long-run averages for San Salvador put December highs around 30°C (86°F) and lows around 17°C (63°F), with only a few millimeters of rain for the whole month. The air is drier than in the green season, mornings are crisp and the volcano views are clearer. The one thing not to underestimate is the sun: the UV index is very high on clear days, even when the temperature feels mild.
Pacific Coast: El Tunco, El Zonte, La Libertad, Costa del Sol
Hot, sunny and reliably dry — classic beach weather. Dry-season surf tends to be smaller and cleaner than the big south swells of the middle of the year, which makes December a friendly month for beginners and longboarders. Rip currents are strong on Salvadoran beaches all year, so swim where locals swim. Pick a base with our best beaches guide and the Surf City guide.
San Salvador & the Central Valley
Warm afternoons and pleasant evenings — ideal for walking the historic center at night when the Christmas lights are on. Early mornings are the time to hike El Boquerón, the crater of the San Salvador volcano, before clouds build over the rim.
Western Highlands: Santa Ana, Cerro Verde, Ruta de las Flores
The coolest region, and the most atmospheric in December. Nights in Apaneca, Juayúa and around Cerro Verde can feel cold, so bring a real layer. Trails are dry and summit views are at their most reliable — see our volcano hiking guide.
Events & Festivals in El Salvador, December 2026
Villa Navideña — Historic Center, San Salvador (December 1–31)
The Ministry of Tourism has confirmed the return of the Villa Navideña, the Christmas village in the restored historic center of San Salvador, and the official tourism calendar lists it for the whole month. Expect lights, decorated plazas, food stalls and family activities. It's best after dark. Pair it with our things to do in San Salvador list.
Andrea Bocelli — Estadio Jorge “Mágico” González (Saturday, December 5)
The Italian tenor brings his Romanza World Tour to San Salvador, in what local media describe as his only confirmed date in Central America. The concert date was changed once during planning, so double-check your ticket for the final schedule. Our concerts in El Salvador 2026 guide tracks the full lineup.
Luces Campero Christmas Light Shows (December 6 & 12)
Pollo Campero's “La Noche de los Deseos” light show returns in two stadiums: Sunday, December 6 at Estadio Cuscatlán in San Salvador and Saturday, December 12 at Estadio Juan Francisco Barraza in San Miguel. Both nights start with a family show at 5:00 PM, followed by the light show at 7:00 PM. If you're traveling with children, it's one of the easiest holiday outings in the country — more ideas in our family travel guide.
Fiestas Patronales de Suchitoto — Santa Lucía (December 6–13)
Suchitoto, the colonial town above Lake Suchitlán, honors its patron saint Santa Lucía with a week of dawn celebrations (alboradas), processions and music. It's one of the most charming places in the country to see a traditional patron-saint festival, and it's close enough to San Salvador for a day trip. Start with our Suchitoto travel guide.
Beéle (December 10) & Los Tigres del Norte (December 12) — Estadio Cuscatlán
Colombian artist Beéle plays Estadio Cuscatlán on Thursday, December 10, and Los Tigres del Norte close the year's big-stadium calendar there on Saturday, December 12. Traffic around the stadium is heavy on concert nights, so agree on a ride-hail pickup point a few blocks away.
Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe (Saturday, December 12)
One of the most photogenic traditions of the Salvadoran December. Families dress young children in traditional outfits — boys as Juan Diego, often with painted-on mustaches, girls in embroidered dresses and braids — and bring them to churches dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe for a blessing and a photo. Expect crowds and slow traffic around those churches all day.
Nochebuena & Christmas (December 24–25)
In El Salvador, the main celebration is the night of December 24. Families eat late — tamales, turkey or chicken, and the much-loved pan con chumpe, a turkey sandwich in a rich, spiced sauce — and then the whole country lights fireworks at midnight. December 25 is a national holiday and a quiet family day, so many shops and restaurants keep short hours. For more on traditions and where to celebrate, read our Christmas & New Year guide (en español).
New Year's Eve (December 31)
Another late family dinner and another wave of fireworks at midnight. Beach towns like El Tunco and the Costa del Sol fill up with parties. January 1 is a public holiday. If you want a beach for New Year's, book months — not weeks — ahead.
Best Things to Do in El Salvador in December
1. Go Whale Watching at Los Cóbanos
Humpback whales visit El Salvador's Pacific coast from roughly November to March, and calm dry-season seas make December a good month for boat trips from Los Cóbanos in Sonsonate. Operators, prices and the rules for approaching whales are in our whale watching guide.
2. Tour a Coffee Farm During the Harvest
The coffee harvest is in full swing in December on the volcanic slopes of Santa Ana and the Ruta de las Flores. Watch the cherries being picked and dried, then taste coffee where it's grown. Start with our coffee guide and the Ruta de las Flores guide — Juayúa's weekend food festival is the perfect lunch stop.
3. Hike a Volcano on Dry Trails
Santa Ana's crater lake, Izalco's black cone and El Boquerón are all at their best in the dry season. Start early: the light and the views are best before 10 AM, and the midday sun is fierce.
4. Spot Migratory Birds
December falls in the main birding season, when northern migrants join resident species in mangroves and cloud forests. Our birdwatching guide covers Jiquilisco Bay, Montecristo and El Imposible.
5. Release Baby Sea Turtles
Hatchery releases continue along the coast into December. Go with an organized hatchery so your visit funds conservation — details in our sea turtle guide.
6. Spend a Few Days at Bitcoin Beach
El Zonte — the original Bitcoin Beach — is at its sunniest in December. Book early if your dates touch Christmas or New Year. Thinking of staying longer? See the digital nomad visa guide.
Flying Home for the Holidays? Book Early
December is one of the busiest months of the year for Salvadorans abroad flying home. If you're traveling between mid-December and early January:
- Book flights as early as you can. Our direct flights from the USA guide lists nonstop routes into San Salvador's airport.
- Reserve a rental car now — availability gets tight over the holidays. See the rental car guide.
- Give yourself extra time at the airport in the days before Christmas and right after New Year. Check the airport & flights guide.
- Visiting family? Our guide for Salvadoran-Americans visiting family covers documents, money and logistics.
December Travel Costs
El Salvador uses the US dollar, so there's no exchange-rate math (see our money guide). The first half of December usually still offers reasonable rates in San Salvador and the highlands. In the second half, prices for flights, beach hotels and short-term rentals rise, especially in El Tunco, El Zonte and the Costa del Sol. For daily budgets, see our El Salvador travel cost guide.
What to Pack for El Salvador in December
- Light, breathable clothing and high-SPF sunscreen
- A warm layer (fleece or light jacket) for highland nights
- A hat and sunglasses — the UV is very high on clear days
- Closed shoes with grip for volcano trails
- Something a bit dressier for Christmas Eve or New Year's dinners
- A small cross-body bag for crowded concerts and festivals

Safety in December
El Salvador now ranks among the safest countries in the Americas, and the US State Department rates it Level 1. In December the practical risks are seasonal: crowds at concerts and fiestas, heavy holiday traffic, strong sun and fireworks. Keep valuables close in crowds, stay hydrated, keep your distance from street fireworks on December 24 and 31 — and if you're driving, take extra care on holiday nights.
