What Is the Carnaval de San Miguel?
The Carnaval de San Miguel is the closing night of the patron-saint festivities of San Miguel, El Salvador's main eastern city, held in honor of the Virgen de la Paz (Our Lady of Peace). For one night the downtown streets close to traffic, orchestras and stages set up on corner after corner, floats roll through the center, and the whole city — plus visitors from the rest of the country, neighboring Honduras and the diaspora — dances until late.
It's often called the biggest carnival in Central America, and it has an unusual origin story: it was designed from the start to be a party for everyone, not just the people who could afford to get into a private ball. That openness is still the heart of it. You don't need to be Migueleño, speak perfect Spanish or know the dance steps — you just need to show up.
San Miguel itself, nicknamed La Perla de Oriente (the Pearl of the East), sits at the foot of the Chaparrastique (San Miguel) volcano. It's hot, commercial and proud, and November is when it is at its liveliest. For more on the region, see our San Miguel department guide.
Carnaval de San Miguel 2026: What's Confirmed
The date: Saturday, November 28, 2026
The main carnival night is Saturday, November 28, 2026, as reported by El Diario de Hoy in August. The rule of thumb never changes — it's always the last Saturday of November — so the party falls the weekend after US Thanksgiving (Thursday, November 26).
The headliner: Marc Anthony
In early October the carnival's official social accounts announced Marc Anthony for the 2026 edition. Apple Music's concert calendar separately lists him in San Miguel on Saturday, November 28 at Estadio Félix Charlaix, 7:00 p.m., between two Las Vegas dates (Nov 20–21) and a show in Lima, Peru (Dec 4). It would be the salsa star's return to El Salvador after his December 2, 2023 show at Estadio Cuscatlán on the Viviendo Tour.
What's not confirmed yet, as of October 8, 2026: the full lineup, the number of stages, and access or ticketing for the stadium concert. The official account has mentioned rumors about Marco Antonio Solís but said there is no confirmation in his case. Ask the ia.sv assistant for the latest as the date gets closer.
Who played before
The carnival has built a serious headliner tradition. In 2025, 44 national and international artists performed, led by Juan Luis Guerra, Elvis Crespo and Calibre 50 at Estadio Charlaix alongside the beloved Salvadoran orchestra Los Hermanos Flores. In 2022, organizers brought together nearly 90 artists across the city. Oro Sólido is among the other international acts that have played the carnival.
The Weeks Before: Pre-Carnival Events
The big Saturday is the finale, not the whole show. San Miguel's November festivities build for weeks, and if you can arrive a few days early you'll see a side of the celebration most day-trippers miss:
- Desfile del Correo — the traditional "mail parade" that publicly announces the start of the festivities.
- Carnavalitos — smaller neighborhood carnivals in barrios, colonias and rural cantones, with local orchestras and a much more intimate, family atmosphere.
- Election and coronation of the Carnival Queen — candidates from across the city compete, and the queen rides in the float parade.
- Religious events for the Virgen de la Paz — the patron-saint feast is the reason the carnival exists. Dress and behave respectfully at church events.
- Desfile de carrozas — the float parade through the main streets, which kicks off the carnival night itself.
A Short History of the Carnival
The key figure is Miguel Félix Charlaix, the departmental governor who in 1959 noticed that much of the city was stuck outside the private dances, listening to the orchestras through the walls. His fix was simple and radical: put the orchestras on the street. The city's stadium now carries his name — the same Estadio Félix Charlaix where Marc Anthony is listed to play in 2026.
The soundtrack came soon after. Francisco "Paquito" Palaviccini wrote "Carnaval en San Miguel" after the 1960 edition, and it debuted in 1961. It's played to the xuc, a Salvadoran rhythm tied to exactly the kind of mixing of social classes the carnival was invented for. Expect to hear it more than once on the night.
How to Get to San Miguel
San Miguel is roughly 140 km east of San Salvador. On a normal day the drive takes about two and a half to three hours; on carnival Saturday, leave early — the roads into the city fill up by the afternoon.
- Flying in: international flights land at El Salvador International Airport (SAL), southeast of the capital and on the way east. See our airport guide and direct flights from the USA. Thanksgiving week is one of the busiest of the year for diaspora travel, so book early.
- By car: the easiest way to move around the east. Our rental car guide covers insurance and driving tips. Park well outside the closed downtown area and walk in.
- By bus: intercity buses connect San Salvador and San Miguel throughout the day. Use the ia.sv bus route finder to plan, and check return times — late-night options are limited.
- Getting around: more tips in our transportation guide.
Where to Stay
San Miguel's hotel supply is modest compared with the crowds the carnival brings, so rooms in the city go fast for the last weekend of November. Your options:
- In San Miguel: walk to the party and back. Book as soon as you decide — weeks ahead, not days.
- On the eastern coast: El Cuco and Las Flores, part of the new Surf City 2, make a great base for turning the carnival into a beach week — just arrange a ride back after the party rather than driving yourself.
- Day trip from San Salvador: possible, but it's a long round trip on the busiest night of the year in the east.

Carnival Night Survival Tips
- Heat: San Miguel is one of the hottest cities in the country, even at night. Wear light clothes and comfortable closed shoes, and drink plenty of water.
- Cash: El Salvador uses the US dollar. Bring small bills for street food and drinks; card readers and connectivity can struggle in dense crowds. More in our money guide.
- Pick a meeting point: phone signal gets patchy when the whole city is out at once. Agree on a landmark with your group before you separate. An eSIM helps, but don't rely on it.
- Carry little: keep valuables to a minimum and phones in front pockets, as at any huge street party. See Is El Salvador safe? for the bigger picture.
- Eat like a Migueleño: street stalls line the route — pupusas, panes con pollo, elotes locos and cold drinks fuel the night. Our food guide explains what's what.
- Pace yourself: the music goes late. Plan your ride home before you start, not after.
- Weather: late November is the start of the dry season, so rain is less likely than in October. See best time to visit El Salvador.

Make It a Week in Eastern El Salvador
Most visitors only see the west of the country. The carnival is the perfect excuse to explore the east:
- The eastern beaches — El Cuco, Las Flores and Punta Mango, now part of a World Surfing Reserve. See our Surf City guide and best beaches.
- The Gulf of Fonseca — islands and seafood around La Unión; start with our La Unión guide.
- Morazán's mountains — cooler air, history and hiking north of San Miguel. See the Morazán guide.
- More surf the same week — the WSL World Junior Championships run November 25–29, 2026 at La Bocana, back west near El Tunco.
